4Works well for us!  Jul 21, 2010
I was tired of the under-arm thermometers. I read about this product and decided to get it. I love it! I use it on my baby, toddler and ourselves. I'm paranoid about it being consistent so I always take 3 sequential readings. As long as I properly swipe the forehead (proper place, no hair, no sweat), the readings are extremely close to each other. This thermometer is great and I would recommend it.

1This item is GARBAGE!  Jul 19, 2010
This is the worst item we have ever bought for our children. It doesn't ever want to take the temperture of the children like its suppose to. In fact 98% of the time it will come up with an error reading and if you are lucky enough to actually get a temperture out of the stinking product...you might what to check it again. Why you ask? Because it always gives a different reading a second time around. Your child's temp could be 100.2 the first time and 104.2 a second later. Always, always, always take the temp. twice because we found out the hard way and my son's severe asthma problems adds to the importance of getting an accurate temp. reading. Normally the higher the temp. the worse his asthma gets that's why he always has to been seen by the doctor right away at the first signs of a cold. I would NEVER buy or recommend this product to anyone....NOT even my worst enemy...lol

1Rather Use a Rectal...And That's Saying A Lot  Jul 07, 2010
The only good thing I can say about this thermometer is that it was a good idea. Unfortunately, it is so inaccurate, it might as well have a software program embedded that generates a random number between 93 and 100 because every time my husband and I tried to use it (on ourselves or our baby, fast or slow, left or right, up or down, holding button at various intervals, etc.), it never gave even close to the same reading twice. Contrary to what another reviewer believes, we are capable in every other aspect of our lives; we do not have "an IQ of 60", so I believe the thermometer is what's lacking here, not our intelligence.

I hate the thought of sticking a thermometer in my poor baby's mouth, ear, or anywhere else, so I was excited when someone gave me this as a shower gift. But when it comes to my child's health, I need to know if she actually has a fever or not and how high it is every single time. I guess it's rectal for us.

2Inaccurate readings  Jun 26, 2010
I loved this at first. My first one broke and I must say they had EXCELLENT customer service and sent me a replacement thermometer very quickly. However, the readings do not seem to be accurate. I took my son's temp and then the pediatrician took it with their heavy duty thermometer - it was off by almost 3 degrees!!! For this reason I am looking into finding another alternative.

5This thermometer is every parent's dream for peace of mind  May 23, 2010
I've read all the 1 star reviews and all I can think is that Exergen must be inconsistent in their production or we're talking user error. I've owned this thermometer for many years (the same original one) and it has been remarkably consistent and very accurate. For the first few dozen times we were very concerned so we double checked the readings against a digital standard thermometer. Each time the Exergen was within a degree of the standard thermometer. I cannot emphasize enough that this unit makes a parent's life SO much easier. You can take the temp of a child who is sleeping - a peace of mind all parents need when their child is ill. I have three children under 9 and this unit has been used exclusively hundreds of times on vacations and at home. I think we've replaced the battery once. It did give some irregular readings when the battery was failing, but there's a simple "reality check" you can make with this unit. My advice: simply "scan" the air and read the ambient air temperature. If it's a realistic room temperature reading, it is likely working fine. If not, turn it off and try again. Use common sense when assessing how ill your child is and consult a physician if you are in doubt.

I am purchasing this as a gift for my sister and her new infant. I was pleasantly surprised to see my pediatrician's office began using these over a year ago (probably the busiest office in Orange County, CA). I think that's proof of this thermometer's accuracy and practicality.

Another angle: We did use the Braun ear-scan type for the first few years we had children, but the chances of an accurate reading were SO impossible to predict and the angle of your child's ear canal and your accuracy in placement was simply too great a risk for us. The Exergen is simply more accurate and easier to use in our opinion.
